I just ordered the 2-disc set on this page. I can’t say anything for the live disc, except I can’t wait to receive it! As far as the first disc, I can say that when I first popped it in, I was completely blown away by the Ripper’s vocals. Definitely very dark guitar riffs through the whole album, but nothing tuned down way too low. Also, Lou St. Paul’s riffs are catchy because he maintains a keep-it-simple structure and lets the Ripper do his work.
I would say the guitar reminds me of a cross between Metallica, Slayer, Iron Maiden and maybe a little late-Ritchie Blackmore. The solos aren’t all to die for, they mainly just leave you at the edge of your seat, waiting for the Rippers voice to come in again. I will say that without the Ripper’s incredible vocals, I’m not sure if I would still consider this my favorite metal album of all time.
This is Tim Owen’s best work. I own every album he has ever sung on, and this is his best. His work on Yngwie Malmsteen’s Perpetual Flame was a close runner up though. I’ve been listening to Heart of a Killer over and over for several months now and I can’t give it a rest. I’m dying to hear the live version. Too bad Tim Owen’s changed up his vocal style after this album, I prefer his cleaner singing before he started adding the scratchiness and growling.
At least there wasn’t too much of it on Perpetual Flame. The first 6 tracks are about a fictitious story involving a man named Judge Cohagen and how he sentences a murderer to death, than pays for it later. I won’t give away the story, because I wish I would have sat through the first 6 tracks and learned the plot on my own. The last 3 tracks are awesome too, I just wish that Tim Owen’s would have sang on the song “Winter’s Bane”, it would have been a lot better.
One person found this helpful. It took me a while to get a copy of this CD and I was lucky enough to find a used copy at a price I could live with. This is the two cd set.
I was looking forward to hearing this cd ever since I learned of its existence. I feel this is the best album I’ve heard with Ripper Owens on vox so far. I can understand why Judas Priest wanted him after they listened to this. However, its not just his incredible vocals but the whole package is great. There isn’t any filler songs on this cd.
It was worth every penny. Disc two is mostly live versions of the songs on disc one. However, there are two live songs that weren’t on the studio album. There are also three added demos on disc two and even the demos kick mighty butt. In closing I just can’t see any fan of Ripper Owens not liking this cd.
I’m betting if Rob Halford hadn’t left Judas Priest and they made an album that sounded similar to this it would have been huge for Priest. Its that good. If you are lucky enough to find a copy, especially of the two disc set, jump on it. Awesome songs and awesome album Hard hitting. I bought this cd to check it out because it has Ripper Owens singing. I can’t put my finger on why I don’t like like Ripper.
He sounds skilled but never sings about what I like or he does not sing clearly. He gets annoying. I did like Judas Priest Demolition a lot. But even it has weak songs. Very Good disc with Ripper! This cd rocks.

Paul’s more aggressive vocal style with brutal, crunchy riffs on such standout songs as Trioxynon and Bone Head. Girth was an amalgamation of all that makes great heavy metal music: killer riffs, scorching solos, memorable vocals, poignant lyrics, and a tight, imaginative rhythm section.

He gets annoying. I did like Judas Priest Demolition a lot. But even it has weak songs. Very Good disc with Ripper! This cd rocks. First of all, let me start this review saying I hate bands that don’t mix the bass loud enough, which is the reason why it gets 4 stars instead of 5; most of the album sounds like it’s been played with guitars, drums and vocals. This is a great example where one song, the title track, makes it worth buying this album, so I hope to be forgiven for basing my review and expanding mostly on that one song.
The song Heart Of A Killer is a pure, huge display of heavy metal at its best interpretation, which culminates with the heavy metal sad, dark beauty of the absolutely gorgeous guitar solo, on top of a beautiful, slow chord progression maybe I shouldn’t mention the keyboard bass is louder than the bass guitar in that song, but in this song it all really sounds good , which will send chills down your spine, and beware: if you have a heavy metal heart, YOU WILL CRY by the time you get to the end of the solo, when Tim Owens takes again over the song, taking it to the end, thanks to his absolutely flawless, spine-chilling interpretation.
The rest of the album is good, it does make you think of Judas Priest which is not a bad thing but really, in my opinion, the only one who really stands out is Tim “Ripper” Owens, and the great job he did on this album makes me want to check out his work with Judas Priest and -now- Iced Earth.
After listening to this CD one can only say one thing: the Heavy Metal genre has some of the best singers ever; American Idol Simon Cowell’s jaw would drop after hearing Tim’s voice, if he were a contestant in the show.
I heard this CD purely by chance, and on finding out that Ripper Owens was the singer I decided to buy a used copy from Amazon. I like power metal most metal in fact but this CD is currently one of my favourites. Great songs, and I also like the production. I think this album easily beats anything that Ripper owens did with Judas Priest. If you like power metal in general Hammerfall etc then I feel sure that you will really enjoy this CD.

Though they were widely ignored by both press and public during their original early-’90s existence, Akron, OH’s Winter’s Bane achieved an unexpected taste of cult fame some time after their demise, when their singer, Tim “Ripper” Owens, was chosen to replace Rob Halford in Judas Priest.
First formed in by guitarist Lou St. But though it was a carefully constructed conceptual work, marrying the band’s passion for classic heavy metal with an obvious fixation on serial killers, the album fared poorly enough that Owens soon decided to quit and focus his energies on a far more lucrative parallel gig with a Judas Priest tribute band.
What happened next — Owens’ unlikely selection by Priest to replace long-gone singer Rob Halford in — was of course amazing enough to inspire a movie, though ‘s Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Anniston, was only remotely accurate to the true story.
But Owens’ good fortune was also motivation enough for St. Paul now singing himself and Hayes to re-form Winter’s Bane and record a new album entitled Girth, with new members David Hayes guitar and Todd Bertolette drums. This quick cash-in attempt didn’t convince many metalheads, however, and Winter’s Bane broke up once again, presumably for good, shortly thereafter. Listen Now Browse Radio Search. Open in Music.
