The book itself is great, very easy to follow along with and shows you everything you need to know about InDesign. Only one important thing I should mention.. Unfortunately I did not know there was a code in the back of the book needed to retrieve online lesson files to follow along with the book.
Lesson learned. Indesign is probably the gold standard of publication layout programs. It definitely has much more capability than a word processor, but it is a complex program. Like Photoshop, one will never learn all the tricks without some guidance. I’ve taken about ten of the lessons in the book. The book is well written, and most times I’ve had no problems following the instructions.
I have the ebook on my iPad and do the exercises on my desktop or laptop computer. The only real problem is that the illustrations of the icons in the instructions are too small on the iPad as they would be on a Kindle ; however the program’s tool tips are a big help in finding the correct icon.
I don’t time myself, but it seems that the exercises take longer than the estimate in the book. I usually learn about programs by trial and error, but decided to get this book because Indesign is a very complex program like Photoshop. I have learned several techniques that I never would have discovered by myself. This book will definitely help me to be more productive with the program. I have a relatively straightforward project that I think I now have the tools to work my way through. As anyone who’s played with InDesign knows, some of the text and graphic layout controls are pretty subtle. When you’re anchoring a graphic, for example, you must find a small blue box — perhaps 5×5 pixels — and drag that onto a paragraph. If you grab the box or graphic itself, it won’t work. The text becomes less clear about these nuances as one gets further into the book.
There are also some drag and drop exercises that do not work in Windows 7, despite the text, but since you have already learned alternate ways of doing the same thing, this does not stop the exercise. It’s just frustrating. The real frustration, however, comes at the end of the book. Chapter 17 is supposed to be a download from the Peachpit site, along with the lesson files, but despite registering the lesson code and the ISBN number, the text for the lesson is nowhere to be found.
I suspect that if you were to buy from the Peachpit site, you would not have this problem, but it is extremely annoying to have followed all these lessons religiously and then be denied the final lesson. C’mon, Adobe and Peachpit. My version, at least, was electronic.

In the next version, please use a larger font size at least 12 point! Please note that these icons need to be a good size! Blow them up, please and truly identify them. Plus, start each chapter and subject area by telling us what the thing is you are talking about.
Again, the author presumes too much. If I knew as much as she presumes, I probably would not have needed to purchase the book. I am quite familiar with software – including the adobe family.
I am not a super expert but I can find my way around. This book it was clearly written by a bunch of technocrats that assume you are familiar with terms after mentioning them once. Most of the illustrations are between ‘hard to understand’ and ‘useless’. Quite a few if them are printed so small they are literally not readable. I have already given up trying to navigate my way through all the lessons because I simply cannot work it out. Generally the dryness of the overall instruction will make your head spin.
This book may teach you some basics of InDesign. But do not expect this to be a fun or joyful learning experience. Generally I find this book very frustrating. I actually, in a fit of rage, threw it out. The “exercises” are horrible. The explanations are ridiculous. The small course I took on Udemy was times better than this blasted book. NONE of it was helpful and in a moment of frustration and stress, having a guide that provides no guidance is beyond infuriating.
Exactly as pictured. Now I just wish there was a tutor that came with the book to teach me how to use InDesign. I love all the classroom in a book series, however, I am noticing that because of different versions and updates, the book doesn’t always follow with how my version works. It can be confusing. This book, like all Adobe tutorials, is not a straight forward approach to learning. There is no one page that lists all shortcuts or one page that lists a map of the entire programs and lists what functions do.
Instead, you need to commit to sample projects over many hours, flipping back and forth through the book, finding answers here and there until you can make an educated guess on how a function works. To be honest, I found searching a result online to be more useful. This book only really applies if its for a required course or if you want to use the samples. Otherwise, don’t bother. It came in slightly beat up. Kind of disappointed but hoping that the book is good.

I am trying to write a cookery book with quality photos and text written in Word and Adobe In Design seems to be the best way forward plus it has plug-ins for Blurb books. It is the industry standard. I initially thought I could just look at the many tutorials on You tube and that helped to get me started, but I kept hitting brick walls on simple things like master page layouts, or finding bullets and transferring text from MS Word to In Design It helped me a lot to become a user and I have now done 10 pages in just a few days, together with various photos.

OK can seem a bit pricey, but the book sits permanently on my desk and the index is also very easy to use for one off queries. As anyone who’s played with InDesign knows, some of the text and graphic layout controls are pretty subtle.
When you’re anchoring a graphic, for example, you must find a small blue box — perhaps 5×5 pixels — and drag that onto a paragraph. If you grab the box or graphic itself, it won’t work. The text becomes less clear about these nuances as one gets further into the book. There are also some drag and drop exercises that do not work in Windows 7, despite the text, but since you have already learned alternate ways of doing the same thing, this does not stop the exercise.
It’s just frustrating. The real frustration, however, comes at the end of the book. Chapter 17 is supposed to be a download from the Peachpit site, along with the lesson files, but despite registering the lesson code and the ISBN number, the text for the lesson is nowhere to be found. I suspect that if you were to buy from the Peachpit site, you would not have this problem, but it is extremely annoying to have followed all these lessons religiously and then be denied the final lesson.
C’mon, Adobe and Peachpit. My version, at least, was electronic. Just put it in the book. Please see my update in Comments. This book has none of those problems.

I worked my way through the tutorials. I have some Udemy tutorials for InDesign but these were more helpful. I wish there were a sequel to this book with more on just making really good ebooks. This book serves the purpose that it claims to. A complete course, and a compendium of features. I love how the compendium “tabs” are listed at the side of each page. Nice touch. It will be easier for you and clearer. InDesign I’d a great software to make beautiful magazine layouts, add pictures from PSD and illustrations from Illustrator, make booklets, poster etc. But you need to know the typographical rules and have a minimum of graphic design knowledge. Then a whole world will wait for you.

It is by far my preferred go to for design and layout, BUT since I am now mostly retired, it is most annoying that I am no longer able to use my older Adobe InDesign program and now am forced to pay for an annual subscription!

This is non-returnable, non-refundable! Quark has been running some fantastic sales recently that have seen half off their latest software. Version of XPress has been a joy to use so far and has several great YouTube videos that got me up and running on the software in about a week or so. If you are an InDesign CS6 hold out like I was you might want to take advantage of this deal I find the latest version of Quark to be vastly better then CS6 and still have almost every feature that ID CC has including some that it doesn’t have yet.

Unfortunately I did not know there was a code in the back of the book needed to retrieve online lesson files to follow along with the book. Lesson learned. I’ve completed the first two chapters through page 51 of the Kindle edition using the downloaded samples with no glitches, hang-ups, mysteries or failed instructions. Nothing fancy. It just works. I got this book so that I would understand InDesign and not improvise my actions while I work on projects.
I want to work smart, not hard. This book gives a great overview of the software, but I’m not sure how well it prepares a person for the Adobe Expert certification exam. But the book is well written, and straightforward. This is a very good book to learn InDesign. Two points I would make, however: 1 It greatly helps to have some experience with other Adobe programs to be familiar with layers, panels, etc.
If you were to simply read through the lesson and do the examples once as you read along, it may be accurate, but in order to really get it, explore the tools in more detail and understand the material, it does take longer. Lesson learned. Indesign is probably the gold standard of publication layout programs. It definitely has much more capability than a word processor, but it is a complex program.
Like Photoshop, one will never learn all the tricks without some guidance. I’ve taken about ten of the lessons in the book. The book is well written, and most times I’ve had no problems following the instructions. I have the ebook on my iPad and do the exercises on my desktop or laptop computer. The only real problem is that the illustrations of the icons in the instructions are too small on the iPad as they would be on a Kindle ; however the program’s tool tips are a big help in finding the correct icon.
I don’t time myself, but it seems that the exercises take longer than the estimate in the book. I usually learn about programs by trial and error, but decided to get this book because Indesign is a very complex program like Photoshop. I have learned several techniques that I never would have discovered by myself. This book will definitely help me to be more productive with the program. I have a relatively straightforward project that I think I now have the tools to work my way through. As anyone who’s played with InDesign knows, some of the text and graphic layout controls are pretty subtle. When you’re anchoring a graphic, for example, you must find a small blue box — perhaps 5×5 pixels — and drag that onto a paragraph. If you grab the box or graphic itself, it won’t work.
The text becomes less clear about these nuances as one gets further into the book. There are also some drag and drop exercises that do not work in Windows 7, despite the text, but since you have already learned alternate ways of doing the same thing, this does not stop the exercise.
It’s just frustrating. The real frustration, however, comes at the end of the book. Chapter 17 is supposed to be a download from the Peachpit site, along with the lesson files, but despite registering the lesson code and the ISBN number, the text for the lesson is nowhere to be found. The “exercises” are horrible. The explanations are ridiculous. The small course I took on Udemy was times better than this blasted book.
NONE of it was helpful and in a moment of frustration and stress, having a guide that provides no guidance is beyond infuriating. Exactly as pictured. Now I just wish there was a tutor that came with the book to teach me how to use InDesign. I love all the classroom in a book series, however, I am noticing that because of different versions and updates, the book doesn’t always follow with how my version works.
It can be confusing. This book, like all Adobe tutorials, is not a straight forward approach to learning. There is no one page that lists all shortcuts or one page that lists a map of the entire programs and lists what functions do. Instead, you need to commit to sample projects over many hours, flipping back and forth through the book, finding answers here and there until you can make an educated guess on how a function works.
To be honest, I found searching a result online to be more useful. This book only really applies if its for a required course or if you want to use the samples.

I have used the Adobe programs for many years, especially InDesign, the old Pagemaker. It is by far my preferred go to for design and layout, BUT since I am now mostly retired, it is most annoying that I am no longer able to use my older Adobe InDesign program and now am forced to pay for an annual subscription!
I really don’t use it often enough to make it worthwhile but since I have a very large number of saved. As far and as fast as you can away from this product. I have no idea what just happened to me. I was recommended this program as a means to design a cover for a book. I use Photoshop and Lightroom and was reasonably assured that I could do magic with this program.
Even the most basic basic basic programs that have nothing to do with design can do more than this program. This is non-returnable, non-refundable! Quark has been running some fantastic sales recently that have seen half off their latest software. Version of XPress has been a joy to use so far and has several great YouTube videos that got me up and running on the software in about a week or so.
If you are an InDesign CS6 hold out like I was you might want to take advantage of this deal I find the latest version of Quark to be vastly better then CS6 and still have almost every feature that ID CC has including some that it doesn’t have yet.
